Arrange for Movers

You will want to make sure this is one of the first things you plan for! Moving companies book up very far in advance and you'll want to make sure you get to book your ideal date. Other considerations are whether you want to move the day of closing, or you want the movers to hold your items overnight for a small fee. There are pros and cons to both. Depending on how much stuff you need to move your movers may not be able to finish before the keys are handed over to the new owners. It's best to sit down and decide what is the best option for you.

You may also decide you want to move yourself. This is a cost-effective and ambitious undertaking. Arrange for a rental moving truck that will hold all your belongings. Make sure you have solid help the day of. And don't forget to feed your workers for all their hard efforts.

Declutter

Make piles for donation, to sell, to store, or simply to throw away. Think about your future space and where you will put things. It's a time to get organized and start fresh!

Moving Boxes

Moving boxes can be purchased from your moving company or local stores. Another great option to save money is to scour the internet, like Facebook Marketplace, to see if anyone is selling or giving away moving boxes. Another alternative is to have your movers pack for you. While this is the most expensive option, it may be the most fitting for your situation.

Set-Up/Cancel Utilities

Arrange for your current utilities to cease on the day of closing to ensure you aren't paying for services you are not using. Make sure to set up your new utilities in advance for your new home, to ensure there isn't any interruption of service.

Change of Address

This process may seem daunting because there are so many addresses that will need to be changed. The great news is with technology, almost everything can be done online now. For example, you can change your Ontario Driver's Licence and Health Card online, and in advance. You simply provide your move-in date and voila!
